Wolfkin

You'll know where this one is going fairly early on, but it's still a fun ride in this tale of a class culture clash and a troubled boy. The single mother goes to the absent father's wealthy parents for help, but only finds problems of different kinds as the family legacy and secrets are revealed. 6...

Mastemah

An enjoyable clash between the science and the supernatural. A good lead and a decent, if predictable, plot along with the central riddle and ominous tone help to keep this one interesting. I wasn't sure about the post-credits twist though, as this didn't seem to make sense compared with the rest of...

Deadstream

Plenty of fun, laughs, tension, jump scares and thrills and spills in this horror comedy. I wasn't really prepared for the transition from a ghost movie to Evil Dead but it did help up the ante. The lore and the online aspect both contributed well to the story in this contemporary streaming shocker....

Candy Land

Incredible! Rest stop sex workers make a gruesome discovery in this powerful shocker. I loved this one, with some fearless performances. There is humour in this, but it becomes increasingly dark and bloody as the film unfolds. A superbly executed killing spree, followed by two more twists round this...

Dark Glasses

A triumphant return to Frightfest for Dario Argento with a neo-giallo that has a really strong opening act. The middle is more about consequences and relationships, but then returns to its giallo origins including a chase sequence in the third act with a satisfying ending. The score is interesting -...

An incredible achievement, blending archival footage with a modern production, this tale of two sisters is part alternative history and part sci-fi. A chilling and convincing portrayal of

The Group

A gripping and tense support group meets

An Inspector Calls
flick with some good performances and a nicely menacing role for the antagonist that wisely doesn't go too OTT. Sins and secrets - as well as blood - are spilt as the group bids to survive.

The Ones You Didn't Burn

A slow burning drama that features themes of paranoia, loss, love, dread and addiction, amongst others.

There may not be enough going on quickly enough for some viewers, but others will enjoy the gorgeous visuals, the very good performances and the subtleties and complexities of this film.

Midnight Peepshow

Whilst the first two segments aren't bad and both improve over the course of their telling, this anthology really hits its stride with the third part, which is directed by long-time festival fave, Jake West. Overall, you'll have some fun and laughs, while there are darker and gorier parts too. 7.5 /...

Who Invited Them

A fun uninvited guests game of cat and mouse that eventually raises the stakes with a reasonable pay-off.

Night Sky

A road trip with a sci-fi twist and with a compelling central partnership at its heart. Affecting and heartfelt. It also has a dash of No Country For Old Men too. I did guess the twist at the end, although it did actually raise more questions than answers.

Orchestrator of Storms

An interesting and ultimately poignant documentary about Jean Rollin, an underrated Eurocult auteur who has gained appreciation in recent decades. Plenty of clips and talking heads, focusing more on key films rather than all of them equally. Now it's time for me to catch up on the remaining Rollin f...

The Harbinger

Another good effort from the reliable Andy Mitton. A typically small scale, slightly slow burning tale of the supernatural, but this one opens up a bit more widely in scope and it has more fantastical elements than usual. It's also an effective and occasionally humorous portrayal of the pandemic and...

The Breach

An intriguing sci-fi mystery with a nice sense of foreboding and dread. Some great body horror too - definitely not for the squeamish! It reminded me of the best bits of Channel Zero.

Scare Package II: Rad Chad's Revenge

An improvement on the original with this sequel having some better segments and the wraparound story is more coherent. There is also a clearer throughline from start to finish. It's good fun spotting the multitude of references to other horror movies.
