Great start to the day. Funny, well paced, likable characters, and well directed.
Reminded me a bit of Galaxy Quest (bunch of losers overcome adversity to fight an alien threat), which can only be a good thing.

Re: Belly of the Bulldog
The Q&A made me like this more than actually watching the film. I appreciate the mystery aspect, but I think we needed a tiny bit more information to go on to actually gain some enjoyment from watching it. I found it quite hard work that we had no idea what was going on from the first shot and t...

Re: The Unspoken
I liked the opening sequence on this, and it did have a good atmosphere in places. However, this was undone by way too many telegraphed loud jump scares, no rules whatsoever, the ridiculous exposition scene at the end and ludicrous final shot.
Ah well, the dead dog and nails kills were good.

Re: Momentum
This was good fun, and well directed. I enjoyed the Q&A afterwards, especially as I didn't know anything about Jim Mickle doing a TV series of Joe R Lansdale's Hap & Leonard books, but I do now ! I liked Purefoy's character, but he did monologue to a ridiculous degree. There was way too much...

Re: The Vatican Tapes
Considering this was directed by Mark Neveldine I was expecting it to be fast edit shaky cam bullshit, so I was actually pleasantly surprised as my expectations were very low. Fairly by the numbers exorcism stuff though, albeit with a slightly unusual ending. For once Dougray Scott wasn't totally wo...

Re: Tales Of Halloween
Not amazing, but I much preferred this to Christmas Horror Story. Most of the segments weren't brilliant, but because there were so many more EC Comics style stories they resolved themselves quickly and hit their punchlines faster. Christmas Horror Story dragged out it's not very well thought throug...
Re: Emilie
I quite liked this one, although it was a bit messy plot wise. Great acting, especially from the youngest kid. We knew she was wrong from the start, but was interesting to see the kids come to that realisation through her irresponsibility and lack of care. The bedtime story scene was poor exposition...
Re: Slumlord
It was pretty sleazy, but not very satisfying. The protagonists had no idea what was going on until the very end, by which time it was too late. They had no opportunity to fight back, or try to put one over on Slumlord which made for an unsatisfying and depressing viewing experience. I hope the dog ...

Re: Night Fare
Definitely one of my favourites of the fest. I really liked the ending. I know it doesn't make total sense, but it was way more interesting than them having a boring scrap with the taxi driver in the abandoned warehouse at the end. What they did (for me) made it much more interesting and memorable. ...

Re: The Diabolical
Another film that started really well but once it revealed it's 'twist' became stupid and ran out of steam. I've still got no idea why they were sending the guy back in time or what the point of it all was. The exposition scene with the 2 orderlies/guards in the future was really clumsy and still di...

Re: A Christmas Horror Story
Shatner was fun, and I loved the Santa/elves story although I guessed the 'twist' early on. The other stories didn't really amount to much, the creepy haunted school was totally by the numbers, Crampus didn't go anywhere, and the Changeling story was a great idea that was a bit squandered. Fun and w...

Re: We Are Still Here
I loved this. The Dagmar family looked awesome and all the attack scenes were super creepy, especially when Larry Fessenden's son turned up with his girlfriend.
Loved the fulci style squishy finale too. Not a massive amount of depth to it, but definitely one of my favourites of this year.

Re: Demonic
Given that this was the Weinsteins asking James Wan for some bottom of the Saw/Inisdious idea barrel scrapings I was expecting this to be utter rubbish, but it wasn't bad. The teenagers weren't that irritating, having Frank Grillo and Maria Bello helped, and the intercutting of the timelines was rea...
Re: Shut In
Really liked the beginning of this, and the twist itself was very cool, making you wonder where the film was going to go with it. Unfortunately the answer was not anywhere particularly interesting, especially as she was the passive part of the murdery sibling relationship. The film totally ran out o...
