Re: The Golem

4/10. This modern re-imagining of the silent era classic is The Paz Brothers' follow up to their holy land found footage run around, Jeruzalem . As with that film, they bring their own cultural heritage to bear - but in this case, not nearly enough. Where the orginal Golem was an incredible spectacl...

Re: The Field Guide to Evil

3/10. Dreary anthology of world folklore that outstays its welcome by about half an hour and at least two segments.

Re: Open 24 Hours

5/10. A solidly run of the mill slasher that I quite enjoyed for the first two thirds, where there were possibilities to take it in a more interesting direction. It goes downhill fast in the final third once you realize that James ('The Rain Ripper') is indeed real and not a manifestation of Mary's ...

Re: Tigers Are Not Afraid

9/10. Standout of the fest for me. Strong storytelling, genuinely moving while eschewing overt sentimentality, coupled with imaginative cinematography and crisp sound design make this a real gem of magical realism.

Re: Terrified

6/10. After a day of damp squibs and non-horror, it was gratifying to watch an old school shocker that goes for chills and largely succeeds in its mission. The story is underdeveloped and doesn't quite hang together like it should, but it makes up for it with a sustained atmosphere of dread, some we...

Ghost Mask: Scar

2/10. The nadir of what was a pretty poor Sunday (things did pick up after this one!) From the poster and brief synopsis, I was hoping for South East Asia's answer to American Mary, but was instead treated to a faintly ludicrous melodrama with a bit of horror tacked on at the end - and when I say th...

Re: The Man Who Killed Hitler and then The Bigfoot

3/10. The more I think about this film, the more it annoys me. The title looks like it's gunning for classic B movie territory, with a lot of trashy fun to be had along the way, but what you actually get is a cloyingly sentimental story of love, loss and regret with a barely a passing nod to those e...

Re: Hell Is Where The Home Is

4/10. Home invasion movie that twists and turns in an attempt to hold your interest but finally pisses credibility up the wall when the police turn up in the last act. This also involves a real bugbear of mine: characters who have shown no previous inclination for violence suddenly becoming seasoned...

Re: Fright Fest

2/10. Made Rob Zombie's 31 look like a cinematic masterpiece. A darkly lit, shoddily edited mess with undifferentiated characters, uninspired kills and nothing resembling a plot that I could discern. It's like the filmmakers threw a bunch of slasher ingredients into a location and shut the doors hop...

Re: Upgrade

8/10. Tightly scripted, well-made sci fi that makes the absolute most of its limited resources to create a dark, compelling future world. Not exactly groundbreaking - it plays a lot like an extended episode of Black Mirror - but what it does, it does just right. It's fast paced, with immersive sound...

Re: Halloween

9/10. New restoration of arguably the most influential slasher of all time. Great to finally see this genuine classic on the big screen, where it was meant to be seen.

Re: One Cut of the Dead

7/10. Genuinely funny, multi-layered zombie joint from Japan that shows just how much you can do with a very limited budget when the core idea is rock solid. It's clever, in that it makes you think about what you're seeing (and not seeing) when you watch a movie, but never gets bogged down by its fr...

Re: Ravers

6/10. Contrary to expectations, loved the soundtrack to Ravers. Not the kind of mainstream trance techno you normally get in club scenes in movies but full of authentic big room bangers; proper dark techno. The downside of having such a thumping soundtrack is that I actually wanted less talking so I...

Re: Boar

3/10. Not the outrageously schlocky throwback creature feature promised by the poster, but a dull litany of killings, perpetrated by a large, but oddly static boar. This was was a grind. I'll skip the obvious pun, but safe to say Boar didn't offer much assistance in the fight against sleep.
