Re: Chained
8/10 from me as well. And I thought the ending was spot on. It made more sense (to me) about why he kept the kid alive in the first place. In fact (and I'm never going to tire of saying this one) when I told Jennifer Lynch the very same just after the end credits had rolled and she was on her way out of the auditorium she flung her arms around me, gave me a big hug and planted a smacker on the side of my cheek (the one on my face) while Alan Jones looked on! Now that's what I call proper interaction between filmmaker and audience! If I could have got something similar off of American Marys's Katharine Isabelle as well then that would have been my bestest last day at a Frightfest ever (as it was I did get a big grin out of her in the Phoenix a couple of hours back so that's good enough)jonbly wrote:8/10 - another good one! We seem to be on a roll this year. Not sure about the ending, but for jonbly it didn't particularly hurt the film... just felt a little odd.
Re: Chained
Quite liked this and Vincent D'Onofrio was excellant and suitably creepy in it.

Re: Chained
An unexpected gem and one of this year's highlights - intelligent, compassionate and gripping.
I did have some reservations about the ending, but these were swept aside by the JL's candid and articulate performance in the Q&A.
I'll snap up the director's cut as soon as it becomes available.

Re: Chained
Even poor old Jennifer Lynch was apologetic about the ending which really undermined the integrity and intelligence of all that had gone before. Hopefully the director's cut puts that right, but if it so obviously doesn't work why not fix it in the original cut??
Re: Chained
I don't get why people have a problem with the ending, for me its the only one that makes sense. Bob doesn't abduct children, he's only interest in young women, why would he suddenly take a women with a kid?
Re: Chained
I also found the ending worked well. Almost perfect, in fact, as twists go.
And as Chary says, it was in keeping with his m.o. to keep the boy, and also a subtle way of getting back at his brother.
I do like Vincent D'Onofrio, and his portrayal of the troubled killer was as good as I'd expected, but his character was out-creeped at the last minute, by his brother. Much preferred this film to the torture porn alternative, and the moral strength of the young lad tells an interesting and original tale about the cycle of abuse.
It was bugging me where I had seen the actor who played Rabbit's father before, and goodness me, he was Matt in the excellent American Gothic TV series.

Re: Chained
*SPOILER ALERT*
Right, at the end of the film, was the girl (Angie?) chained to the bed? It seemed odd that she was washed and dressed, but still in the house...
Great film. Felt quite sick for a while after it.

I note that Jennifer Lynch would have changed but the duration of the scene with Eamon Farren (Rabbit) and Jake Weber (his Dad). That opens up a very different end for Rabbit's education.
I didn't get that the girl was chained to the bed at the end, but that's an interesting interpretation also.

Not sure if she was chained, but the shot of her lying on the bed seemed quite deliberate...AdeBrown wrote:mamawaldi wrote:Even poor old Jennifer Lynch was apologetic about the ending which really undermined the integrity and intelligence of all that had gone before. Jennifer, if you are reading this, or if your brother Joe is, please explain.

Re: Chained
One of the surprises of the festival for me. Came very close to bailing before hand and going for the Discovery screen. So glad I didn't.
Parallels with Henry will always follow serial killer movies but I found this equally fascinating and strangely compelling. Definitely in my top 5/6 of this years line up.

Re: Chained
It seems to be that Jennifer Lynch is a very intelligent woman who studios or whoever makes the final decision about anything should just let use her own judgement.
Calling the film 'Rabbit' for a start would have been better as regards intrigue.
I too look forward to a director's cut version and also I do question with Angie was herself chained up at the end or not.
After all it is a film about 'how monsters are made'.

Re: Chained
Very interesting film about what does make a monster. During the film was hoping that Rabbit would turn out like the man who imprisoned him. Rather informative Q & A.

Re: Chained
My interpretation is that Rabbit is a good matey really, and won't turn out exactly like Bob.....but has kept the girl chained because he doesn't know what else to do with her, or doesn't want her to leave....lupogirl wrote:Very interesting film about what does make a monster. The more I think about this film, and of all the last week's films, this is the one I am reconsidering the most, the more I am impressed with it.
